Talking About
the Future of Skin
Skin science insights
from COSEEDBIOPHARM and KEYPROGEN

We Visited Osong,
Where K-Beauty Came Together!
The 2026 Cosmetics & Beauty Expo Osong took place
from October 22 to 24 at OSCO in Cheongju!
With a record 254 companies and 348 booths,
the event welcomed 17,400 visitors over three days.
Bringing together beauty companies and buyers from Korea and around the world,
the event also gave us an opportunity to share insights into skin science.

The first presentation was given by
Jung-no Lee, Director of the Bio Convergence Research Institute
at COSEEDBIOPHARM.
What research should the cosmetics industry focus on
to support healthy skin aging?
Using a matrix connecting seven research areas,
he explored the landscape of longevity research
and how these insights can guide the development of cosmetic ingredients.

Supporting healthy skin aging also means considering
how to manage cells that have already become senescent.
The presentation introduced senolytic research,
which focuses on selectively eliminating senescent cells,
and highlighted fisetin as a compound of interest.
It also introduced Fisenolyme,
a cosmetic ingredient developed by translating this research
into ingredient innovation.

To understand an ingredient’s value,
we also need to look at the test results.
When evaluating senolytic activity,
it is important to determine whether an ingredient selectively eliminates
senescent cells while having minimal effects on normal cells.
By comparing the responses of these two cell types,
the presentation demonstrated
Fisenolyme’s selective senolytic effects.
Next, KEYPROGEN CEO Moon-seon Ham
gave a presentation on filaggrin.
She covered how filaggrin is produced
using recombinant technology,
along with its effects when incorporated into cosmetics.

Filaggrin is a protein that brings together keratin
within the cells that form the stratum corneum,
helping build its structure.
As it breaks down,
it also contributes to the formation of natural moisturizing factors (NMF).
From supporting skin structure to retaining moisture,
these roles explain why filaggrin is important
for both skin barrier function and hydration.

Even a protein essential to the skin
needs to be produced reliably
before it can be used as a cosmetic ingredient.
KEYPROGEN has an AI-powered platform
for high-expression, ultra-fast recombinant protein production.
The company develops protein ingredients
by engineering cells to produce target proteins
and improving production efficiency.

Using this recombinant protein production technology,
KEYPROGEN developed what it presented as the world’s first
filaggrin for use as a cosmetic ingredient.
This makes it possible to produce a protein
that plays an important role in the skin barrier
and use it in cosmetic formulations.
From the development process to its effects in cosmetic applications,
the presentation showed how skin research
can translate into skincare.
